On November 3rd and 10th, 2024, Newborough launched a new series of professional development workshops geared to introducing parents and classroom staff to the philosophy and presentations used in the Montessori Method of Education. These workshops aim to provide a basic knowledge of the many curriculum areas within the Montessori classroom for parents, new staff, assistants, and ECEs, as well as providing a brief refresher for previously accredited Casa teachers.

The first workshop introduced the importance of Practical Life exercises in managing behaviour in the classroom and promoting normalization. Over the course of two Sundays, workshop participants had opportunities to learn and practice many different Practical Life presentations, as well as exploring and discussing aspects of Dr. Montessori's philosophy related to child development.

Workshop participants channelled their "inner child" as they poured, spooned, and snipped through the activities on the Practical Life shelves. They explored the absorbent mind and how the teacher can foster calm independence in the child by preparing the environment with developmentally appropriate work. Attendees also challenged their creativity by planning a new shelf activity of their own.

As we continue the series of workshops, we will be offering 2 days of Sensorial learning in early January. The workshops are held on Sundays from 9-4:30 in the Newborough classroom on the Century Private School campus in Richmond Hill.
